SCHOOL PROSPECTUS

Welcome to AFIFAH HIGH SCHOOL
From Head Teacher: Mr Hamid Chunara

Dear Parents

There are at present two million Muslims of various nationalities in Britain. By the Grace of Allah they have been able to establish many mosques and Islamic centres.
However, despite this achievement not until recently have they been able to establish credible educational institutions capable of producing the kind of future Muslim adults, who safeguard the Muslim community and who will play an important role in the future of this country.

Meanwhile, we are greatly concerned about the present lack of awareness of spiritual teachings of Islam, which leads to the breakdown of morality and Muslim family values.
We are also concerned about the secular nature of state schools in general and result in under achievement of Muslim children who attend them.

In 2001, Afifah High School was established following requests and an overwhelming desire from the local Muslim community.

It gives me immense pleasure to provide you with the details about Afifah High School.
A Recent OFSTED inspection has now registered Afifah High School as a secondary school. Alhamdulillah this is a great achievement for the community as a whole and a blessing.
Islamic Education is an important part of the school curriculum which all pupils have to take part in, along with other subjects of the national curriculum.

In our school we aim to provide a happy and stimulating environment in which children enjoy learning and are encouraged to do their best. We aim to educate the child, to foster social skills and an understanding of other people’s needs. We acknowledge that all children have individual differences and we value these. We believe that we can only achieve the best for your child by building a ‘working partnership’ with parents. This active partnership has to be based firstly on mutual trust and understanding between home and school. By being informed and involved you will gain an increased understanding of the learning experiences of your child. This means that you can be supportive of your child, in a practical way.

We are proud of our school and the high standard that our children are able to achieve in all curriculum areas. We have an excellent, conscientious staff who have very caring attitudes and high expectations of themselves as well as the pupils in their charge. We all hope that during your child’s time at school there will be time to talk, to listen, to share problems and , hopefully, to laugh together.

CAREERS & GUIDANCE

All teachers have responsibility for curricular and pastoral guidance. It is vital that they know their students have an understanding of how these students learn.
Working with students to ensure that they learn how to make decisions and how to take control of their own learning is the basic function of guidance.
Guidance is an integral part of every teacher's role.

Connexions Manchester undertakes all careers interviews from Year 9 through to Year 11. The careers advisor sets up both individual and group appointments with each pupil to discuss their career objective. This provides the students with an understanding of the career options available to them.

The Careers Service works with the staff to provide support for all students. Students receive support in the lead up to subject choice and also as preparation for leaving school. Students and parents may request individual interviews with career officers.

Each pupil will complete two weeks Work Experience placement in a selected area of employment which his organised by the school.

Form tutors will inspect their students diaries during the week and deal with any comments that require action. We would ask all parents to keep a regular check on the quality of work produced.
Should there be a good reason for a pupil not ding homework, a note should be sent to the members of staff by whom the work was given or to the form tutor.

STRIVING FOR EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION

We aim to nurture the intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual growth of Muslim children with the hope of producing confident, competent individuals who can go out into the BRITISH SOCIETY and contribute positively.

Afifah High school has been in existence since September 2001. The school began from two combined houses with meagre facilities and 5 Muslim girls as pupils.

Afifah High school is based on Islamic ethos emphasizing all the Islamic Values that are important to all of us.

We are striving to provide high quality of balanced education for our pupils in a safe and in an Islamic environment.

• The school helps in preserving Islamic identity for the community at large, and for the children more specifically.
• It provides an environment where the students can practice their religion freely and receive feedback to improve their understanding of Islam.
• It helps our children achieve the best of both the worlds in a secular environment.
• It focuses on Islamic Skills and Qualities according to the Quran and Sunnah in a multi-cultural Society.
• Children excel in all aspects of their life when they grow up in such safe and nurturing environment.

Alhamdulillah, our pupils are very talented and the dedication and commitment of the teaching staff is helping them make excellent progress.
The School obtained its first set of GCSE results in 2006, which were very promising.

The school has been inspected twice by OFSTED (Office of Standard in Education Department by Cambridge) who are pleased with the progress that the school is making.
Currently there are 50 pupils on role; however the demand for places at the school from the Muslim community is increasing; as a result the pupil numbers on the roll are increasing.

Since Afifah High is an independent school it does not receive any financial help from the government. The only sources of income is the school fees and money raised through fundraising efforts by the school staff and member of he community, who are very keen to make the school a success.

Despite many obstacles we continued with resolve on our intellectual educational journey and with Allah’s blessings we laid the strong foundation to establish the school.
With the grace of Allah and with generous help from a Muslim brother, we now have acquired a larger building with all resources required.

Our new premises have adequate space to increase the number of pupils to 125 which has been approved by the local education authority.
